Liebster Award, MVP, and Vacation
What’s the phrase, when it rains it pours! Well I feel that’s what happened to me over the last 24 hours. I was nominated by two different blogs for a Liebster award and even mentioned for a possible MVP award at CNA Finance, make sure to stop by and tell Josh why I should be nominated for the MVP of the Week in the comments, article is pretty interesting as well.
The Liebster award is way to recognize relatively new and/or smaller blogs(that’s me started in April). I was thrilled to be nominated by Jason of Islands of Investing, who’s my favorite Aussie since Andrew Bogut for all you Australian loving basketball fans out there. Jason in his post had this to say about me “Even Steven is a great character with a pretty unique perspective and style. Always a fun and refreshing read!” You know what that’s such a nice compliment since every thing I read from Islands of Investing tells me he is one smart guy. As part of the Liebster award nomination he asked me to answer a few questions and who am I to turn down a request.
I started my blog for a number of reasons. I love talking about money and personal finance, I wanted to share my experiences and ideas with everyone, I wanted accountability and to make sure I wasn’t crazy for my plan to retire in less than 7 years.
What is your favorite blog post so far and why?
My favorite blog post would have to be working for Michael Jordan, it’s my favorite because it received a lot of recognition and comments, I have been waiting to write about my experience for a long time and it felt great to share my experience, also because it’s a once in a lifetime experience, I doubt we will ever see a personal finance blog talking about caddying for Michael Jordan.
What is your ultimate vision for your blog and / or your life?
My ultimate vision for my life is to be able to become Even Steven and ultimately financially independent so that I have the choice to work, retire, or help others. My blog vision is not entirely different I want to share my stories of how I conquered debt and became financially independent, with the goal of helping other people improve their own financial situation.
What is your favorite quote?
One quote that I use often is “Everyone has their own thing”, I’m not sure who can stake claim to this quote, but to me it means that everyone is different and to let them be who they are, don’t judge them it’s not our place. Another one that might be my new favorite Will at firstquarterfinance mentioned was by Ralph Waldo Emerson “‘In my walks, every man I meet is my superior in some way, and in that I learn from him.”
Describe yourself in 3 words
Un-believe-able was the first thing that came to mind, but I like to make jokes sometimes. Funny, Kind, and Motivated.
As I stated above when it rains it pours, Momcents was kind enough to nominate me for my second Liebster award in a 24 hour period. I was not as familiar with Momcents, so I stopped over to check everything out and my first thought was what a great looking blog! She blogs about money and being a parent from a biblical perspective, so think Dave Ramsey with a dress and earrings. She started recently like me and has a great 3 year plan. She has some questions that were different from Islands of Investing, so I am just as eager to answer.
What made you decide to start your blog-venture?
Answered this one above, only duplicate in the bunch.
What is your favorite movie?
This is a tough one for me, since it depends on genre. Here are a few: Billy Madison, Old School, The Godfather, and Scarface.
IE, Firefox, Chrome or Safari? and Mac or PC?
I primarily use Chrome. I think Google might be the greatest company ever. I also have a PC, I tried to do the Apple, iPhone, Mac thing and turned out it wasn’t for me.
If money was no object – what is your dream job?
I’m a big sports guy, so owning a professional sports team. The Chicago Cubs come to mind, but I’m not picky.
If you were given a tax free $1 million dollars tomorrow – what would you do?
That sure would speed up my early retirement plan! I would pay off everything, both houses and any loans out there. I would pay off my parent’s loans and then invest the rest in a fancy Vanguard fund, maybe a few thousand for a fun vacation to Oregon or something to visit Nike.
Who is your hero? (Real or imaginary)
I don’t know if I have a specific person who is a hero to me. The United States Military does heroic things every single day to protect our country, people like Bill Gates are trying to improve the world are heroes, people who do something great for someone, while sacrificing a piece of their own lives are heroes. Didn’t know that was going to get so deep, thought I was just going to say Captain Planet and call it a day.
What is the last movie you seen in the theater?
Divergent, my wife was reading the book and had to see the movie, it had a few scenes based in Chicago so that was cool to see.
What’s your favorite book?
The Five People You Will Meet in Heaven and Bringing Down the House are my favorites, non-business of course.
If you were king/queen for a day – what change would you institute?
I’m not very political, but I do love me some money talk, so I would institute a bunch of budget/spending cuts.
On to my nominations, while I’m not sure how many followers they have, my criteria was to select blogs I like that are fairly new to me.
The New York Budget talks about living on a budget in one of the most expensive cities in the world. He even writes about some of his early retirement goals that are not that far off from my very own. NOMINATED!
Big Guy Money reminds of some of my friends in college, good guys that I could have a beer with and talk about sports and money. He has made progress and paid off debt and is improving his Net Worth. NOMINATED!
DebtDebs was included in Island’s of Investing as well, but I couldn’t help myself. She was nice enough to help me out the other day because that’s the type of person she is. She suggested I update my twitter account for sharing with one of her handy articles. Thank you. NOMINATED!
Journey to Saving is the reason I joined the Yakezie Challenge, she sent some motivation my way and it’s been working on blogging ever since. She wrote an article recently that I enjoyed about Being Happy with Less, which I think is a great. NOMINATED!
For those of you who have been NOMINATED! here are a few questions to answer, no obligations, risk free, no money down, and will end up being fun, Money Back Guaranteed!

Last but certainly not least I am going on vacation starting Thursday and do not plan to have access to internet or for that much anything electronic. I hope to come back with great stories to share and big smile on my face. Thanks for reading, I loved writing it.
